Thy Kingdom Come - Week 6

This powerful exploration of Matthew 27:50-51 centers on one of the most profound moments in Scripture: the tearing of the temple curtain at the moment of Christ's death. For generations, that massive curtain—60 feet tall, 30 feet wide, and as thick as a man's hand—stood as an imposing barrier between a holy God and sinful humanity. It declared a sobering message: God is holy, you are not, so stay back. Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and even then, only once a year after elaborate rituals and sacrifices. Yet when Jesus gave up His life, that ancient barrier was torn from top to bottom, not by human hands but by divine initiative. This wasn't a gentle opening that could be closed again—it was a violent ripping apart that could never be restored. The symbolism is breathtaking: what was opened can be shut, but what is torn is permanently changed. Through Christ's sacrifice, the separation between God and humanity has been completely eradicated. We no longer stand at a distance, nervously wondering if we're welcome. We've been invited into the very presence of God as sons and daughters. The challenge for us today is to stop living as if the curtain still stands, to stop trying to earn our way in through good works or religious performance, and to boldly approach the throne of grace through Jesus Christ alone.
