What if the worst trades we have ever made were not the ones involving money, jobs, or possessions, but something far more profound? Romans 1 opens up a sobering and deeply personal conversation about the exchanges we make at the level of the soul. Paul lays out a pattern that runs through all of human history and through every one of our lives: we trade the glory of God for lesser things, we trade the truth of God for comfortable lies, and we trade the design of God for the pull of our own desires. These are not mistakes made in ignorance. Paul makes the striking claim that we are without excuse, that something deep within us has always known better. And yet we keep making the trade. The spiritual insight here is not meant to shame us but to wake us up. Every created thing we have ever elevated to the place only God deserves, every lie we have ever found more convenient than his truth, every desire we have chased at the expense of his design, these are all symptoms of the same broken condition. The message is urgent and relevant because the consequences are real. When we persistently choose what is lesser, there comes a point where God allows us to have exactly what we chose. That is a sobering reality worth sitting with.
