Cycles of Redemption - Week 4

What does it actually mean to be strong? We tend to celebrate strength in obvious ways -- physical power, force of personality, the ability to dominate a room. But the story of Samson in Judges 16 forces us to ask a harder question: what good is strength without self-control, humility, and submission to God? Samson was arguably the most physically powerful man in the Bible, and yet his life reads more as a warning than a triumph. He was ruled by his emotions, pushed relentlessly against God-given boundaries, and ultimately mistook God's patience for God's approval. The spiritual lesson here cuts deep -- we can drift so far from God through a long series of small compromises that we no longer recognize how far we have wandered. The terrifying part is not just the drifting, but the numbness that comes with it. Samson woke up after his hair had been cut and assumed he could shake himself free just as before. He did not even know that God had left him. That sobering moment invites us to examine our own lives honestly. Are we relying on past spiritual victories as a substitute for present faithfulness? Are we so accustomed to God's grace that we have mistaken it for permission? This message calls us to wake up before the consequences of persistent disobedience do it for us.
